wiTECH 2 Is Now Web-Based: Keep the VCI Setup Utility Open or the MicroPod Will Not Appear

wiTECH 2 now runs through a web link rather than a desktop application, and the VCI Setup Utility has to be open before you log in and stay open for the whole session. Closing it is the most common reason a MicroPod that is connected and configured does not show up in the software.

wiTECH 2 now runs through a web link rather than as a standalone desktop application. The change brings one rule that catches out almost everyone moving to it: the VCI Setup Utility has to be open before you log in, and it has to stay open for the entire session. If it is closed, the MicroPod will not appear in the software, and the symptoms look exactly like a tool fault, a driver problem, or an expired subscription. This Installation & Setup guide covers the correct startup order and what to avoid when troubleshooting.

The correct startup order, every time

  1. Open the VCI Setup Utility first, before anything else.

  2. Leave it open. Do not close or minimise it out of the way in a manner that shuts it down.

  3. Log in through the wiTECH web link, not through an old desktop shortcut.

  4. Confirm the MicroPod appears in the tool list.

  5. Connect to the vehicle.

This sequence runs every session, not just the first time. The utility is what maintains the connection between the pod and the web-based software, so closing it mid-session drops the tool.

Symptoms of the utility being closed

  • The MicroPod does not appear in wiTECH 2 at all, despite being plugged in and previously configured.

  • The tool appears and then disappears partway through a session.

  • Connection errors when selecting the vehicle.

  • The software behaves as though the subscription is inactive when it is current.

If you see any of these, check whether the VCI Setup Utility is still running before troubleshooting anything else.

Do not factory reset the pod for this

Running a factory reset on the MicroPod is a common reaction to a tool that will not appear, and it does not help here. A reset clears the pod's configuration — including its Wi-Fi networks and firmware state — leaving you with more setup to redo and the original problem unsolved.

Confirm the utility is open first. Only consider a reset after that has been ruled out, and preferably with a technician on the line.

Logging in through the new link

The web-based system is reached through a login link rather than a desktop icon. If you are working from a shortcut created before the change, it may no longer route correctly.

Use the current link supplied by AE Tools or from the wiTECH resources page. If you are unsure whether you are on the current system, submit a support ticket and it can be confirmed in a couple of minutes.

Checking your subscription expiration

The subscription expiration date is shown against the tool serial number in the software. Check it there rather than relying on when you think you purchased — a short-term subscription in particular is easy to misjudge.

After a subscription transfer to a new pod

If a subscription has been transferred from an old MicroPod to a new one:

  1. Confirm the new pod shows the subscription and the correct expiration date under its serial.

  2. Delete the old tool entry from the software. Leaving it in place causes the software to offer both, and selecting the old one produces connection errors.

  3. Configure the new pod's wireless settings if you use it wirelessly.

If the pod still does not appear

Submit a support ticket with the pod serial number, whether the VCI Setup Utility was open, the Windows version, and the exact error text. Stating that the utility was open saves a round trip, since it is the first thing a technician will ask.
