What software do I need to work on Mazda vehicles

Mazda has three diagnostic platforms - Mazda IDS, MDARS, and MDSFA. Each has different tool requirements, vehicle compatibility, and service functions.

Mazda has three types of diagnostic software platforms: Mazda IDS, Mazda MDARS, and MDSFA. Each platform has its own tool requirements, vehicle compatibility, and service functions. This article covers what each platform does and which one you need for your Mazda vehicle.

Mazda IDS - full coverage for all Mazda vehicles

Tool Requirements: Mazda VCM II. The Ford VCM II or VCM III will not work with Mazda IDS.

Car Compatibility: All Mazda vehicles.

Service Functions: Key programming, diagnostics, and module programming are all supported.

Note: Mazda IDS comes with MDARS included, so you get both platforms with one subscription.

Mazda MDARS - newer Mazda vehicles using J2534

Tool Requirements: J2534 (3rd Gen) interface such as AEZ3, Cardaq 3, or Snap On Pass Thru Pro 4.

Car Compatibility: 2025-present CX-70, 2024-present CX-90, 2024-present MX-5, 2023-present CX-50, 2022-2023 MX-30, 2021-2023 CX-9, 2021-present CX-5, 2020-present CX-30, and 2019-present Mazda3.

Service Functions: Key programming, diagnostics, and module programming are all supported.

Mazda MDSFA - 2018 to early 2020s Mazda vehicles using J2534

Tool Requirements: J2534 (3rd Gen) interface such as AEZ3, Cardaq 3, or Snap On Pass Thru Pro 4.

Car Compatibility: 2018 Mazda3, 2018-2021 Mazda6, 2018-2023 MX-5, 2018-2020 CX-5 and CX-9, and 2018-present Mazda2 and CX-3.

Service Functions: Key programming is supported. Diagnostics are limited. Module programming is limited - we do not know which modules it will do until we connect to the car with the software.

Mazda MDSFA - 2017 and earlier Mazda vehicles using J2534

Tool Requirements: J2534 (3rd Gen) interface such as AEZ3, Cardaq 3, or Snap On Pass Thru Pro 4.

Car Compatibility: 2017 and earlier Mazda vehicles.

Service Functions: Key programming is supported. Diagnostics are limited. Module programming is limited - we do not know which modules it will do until we connect to the car with the software.

Which Mazda software should I use

If you need full coverage for all Mazda vehicles, use Mazda IDS with a Mazda VCM II. If you have a J2534 tool and need to work on newer Mazdas (2019+), use MDARS. If you have a J2534 tool and need to work on 2017-2023 Mazdas, use MDSFA.
