VW / Audi ODIS Full Setup - GRP Login, TOTP, J2534 / VAS 6154 Setup, and Flat-Rate Subscription

Complete first-time setup for VW / Audi ODIS Service: ordering through AETools, applying for the Group Retail Portal (GRP) account, setting up TOTP authentication, requesting the laptop certificate, installing ODIS with a J2534 interface (recommended) or VAS 6154 dongle, and activating the flat-rate subscription.

What you need before you start

ODIS Service is the OEM diagnostic and programming software for Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini vehicles. Setting it up from scratch requires several pieces, and missing any one of them will block the install. Before you start, confirm you have or have ordered:

- A computer running Windows 10 or 11 Pro.
- A J2534 (3rd Gen) interface - AEZ3 / AEZ Flasher 3, CarDAQ 3, or Snap-on Pass Thru Pro 4 (recommended), OR the VAS 6154 / VOS dongle (OEM tool, but harder to set up and maintain).
- A Group Retail Portal (GRP) account from Volkswagen.
- An authenticator app with TOTP support (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or similar).
- An ODIS security certificate issued by Volkswagen for your specific laptop's hardware ID.
- An active flat-rate subscription (Audi and/or VW).
- Optional: ORWIN subscription if you need service information (separate, ~$500–$1,000/yr).

Note: For an overview of ODIS itself - what it is, what it costs, what vehicles it covers, and how to choose between J2534 and VAS 6154 - see the related article "What software and tools are required to work on Volkswagen and Audi vehicles." This article assumes you've already decided to buy and walks through setup.

Note: Verify current ORWIN pricing and certificate pricing with the AETools sales team - VW / Audi software pricing has changed recently.

Step 1 - Order ODIS through AETools

Contact AETools sales to order ODIS. You'll need:

- A quote for ODIS setup + 1-year support (typical: in the $3,000–$3,700 range - confirm current pricing).
- The laptop where ODIS will be installed.
- Your shop information for the Volkswagen Group Retail Portal application.

VW / Audi pricing increased in early 2026. Plan budget accordingly.

Step 2 - Apply for the VW Group Retail Portal (GRP) account

The GRP account is what authorizes you to use ODIS. It's owned by VW, not AETools - AETools coordinates but cannot create the account for you.

First-time setup requires an application and background check. You will need copies of:

- A valid driver's license.
- A business license.
- A business card.

Submit the application through the AETools-coordinated process:

- Apply for a Group Retail Portal account using your shop manager's email.
- Volkswagen reviews the application and runs the background check.
- Approval takes 10–14 business days for most applications.
- Once approved, you'll receive login credentials and instructions to set up TOTP.

The GRP account is typically tied to the manager's email, not the technician using the software. If management changes, account ownership must be updated through VW.

Step 3 - Set up TOTP authentication

When GRP is approved, you'll be required to set up two-factor authentication using TOTP:

- Sign into GRP with your initial credentials.
- GRP prompts for TOTP setup with a QR code.
- Scan the QR code with Google Authenticator (or similar) on your phone.
- Confirm the first code.
- Save backup codes if offered.

Each future ODIS sign-in will require your GRP username and password plus a TOTP code from the authenticator app.

Note: Confirm with the AETools team - call summaries mention a "win-off TOTP app on the taskbar" which may refer to a desktop TOTP tool used on some setups. Document the official authenticator recommendation.

Step 4 - Request the ODIS security certificate

ODIS requires a security certificate tied to the specific laptop's hardware ID. This is what allows that laptop to authenticate with the VW / Audi server. You cannot move ODIS to a new laptop without requesting a new certificate.

- The certificate cannot be generated until your GRP application is approved.
- Certificate generation usually takes an additional 1–2 days after approval.
- On the laptop where ODIS will be installed, AETools support will run a tool to extract the hardware ID.
- AETools submits a certificate request to Volkswagen with the hardware ID and your GRP account email.
- Volkswagen issues the certificate.
- The certificate is emailed to AETools or to your GRP-linked email.

If you need to authorize additional laptops, each one needs its own certificate. ODIS subscriptions are organization-based, so you can authorize multiple laptops under the same company account.

Step 5 - Install ODIS

While waiting for the certificate, AETools can begin the ODIS install:

- AETools remote sessions in (ScreenConnect code).
- ODIS Service software is installed.
- The J2534 driver (AEZ3 / CarDAQ 3 / Snap-on Pass Thru Pro 4) is installed or VAS 6154 / VOS dongle drivers if using the OEM tool.
- The interface is paired with the laptop (USB connection).
- Setup files are placed in the Porta Setup folder for later configuration.

Note: Verify the current ODIS version with the AETools team before install ODIS versions update regularly.

Step 6 - Install the certificate

When the certificate arrives:

- Save the certificate file to a known location.
- Open ODIS.
- Go to Administration → Manage Certificates → Import (or similar - exact menu may vary by version).
- Browse to the certificate file.
- Enter the password if prompted (included in the certificate email).
- Import.

Step 7 - Sign in and connect to a vehicle

With ODIS installed and the certificate imported, run a real test:

- Plug the J2534 interface (or VAS 6154 dongle) into laptop USB.
- Plug the interface's OBD cable into a VW / Audi vehicle.
- Open ODIS.
- Sign in with GRP credentials + TOTP code.
- ODIS auto-detects the vehicle and reads VIN.
- Run a diagnostic scan to confirm communication.

Step 8 - Activate the flat-rate subscription

Diagnostic functions work with the certificate alone, but programming and online operations require an active flat-rate subscription:

- Verify your Audi or VW flat-rate is active in your GRP account.
- Audi and VW have separate flat-rates - buy each one you need.
- Flat-rates are typically annual.

When the flat-rate expires, you'll see "GRP login error" type messages even though your certificate is valid.

Note: ODIS does NOT require NASTF or an LSID. The ODIS security certificate and approval process give you access to all immobilizer and security functions within the software.

Step 9 - Optional: ORWIN for service information

ODIS itself does not include service information (wiring diagrams, repair procedures, TSBs). For that, you need a separate ORWIN subscription:

- Approximate cost: $500–$1,000 / year.
- Separate purchase, separate login from ODIS.
- Order through AETools or direct from Volkswagen depending on current channel.

Common first-time issues

"GRP login error" with valid certificate - Flat-rate subscription has expired. Check GRP account for active flat-rates.

"VAS 6154 dongle not detected" - USB driver issue. Reinstall dongle drivers. Try a different USB port (USB 2.0 sometimes more reliable). Verify Device Manager shows the dongle. (This is one reason AETools recommends J2534 instead - fewer setup issues.)

"Certificate import fails" - Confirm the certificate file isn't corrupted (try downloading again from email). Verify the certificate matches the laptop's hardware ID - if you switched laptops between request and install, the certificate won't work.

"WiTECH authenticator showing wrong codes for ODIS" - WiTECH and VW Group Retail Portal use separate TOTP setups. Each must be enrolled independently in your authenticator app. They won't share codes.

"ODIS version is behind" - Update through ODIS itself (it has built-in updater) or have AETools push the update remotely.

"Can I run ODIS on a second laptop?" - Yes. ODIS subscriptions are organization-based. Each additional laptop needs its own certificate (request through AETools), but you can run ODIS on multiple computers under the same company account.
