What software and tools are required to work on Volkswagen and Audi vehicles

Everything you need to get started with ODIS software for Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini diagnostics and compatible tools, requirements, certificates, flatrates, and approval timeline.

ODIS (Offboard Diagnostic Information System) is the OEM software for Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini vehicles. It provides access to key programming, diagnostics, and module programming. This article covers what you need to get started with ODIS through AETools.

What ODIS software can do

ODIS provides shops with access to OEM programming and diagnostics for Volkswagen and Audi vehicles. Functions include key programming, vehicle diagnostics, and module programming.

Compatible tools for ODIS

VAS 6154 is the OE (Original Equipment) tool for ODIS. However, it is not recommended because it is difficult to set up and maintain.

The recommended tool is a J2534 (3rd Gen) interface such as the AEZ3, Cardaq 3, or Snap On Pass Thru Pro 4. J2534 interfaces are fully functional within the ODIS software and have no limitations.

Requirements to get started with ODIS

First time setup requires an application and a background check. You will need copies of a valid driver's license, business license, and business card.

After approval, you will need an ODIS security certificate for each laptop you want to authorize. Certificates are hardware-locked to the specific laptop and are required to authenticate with the VW/Audi server. Once installed, the certificate allows that specific device to run ODIS and connect to Volkswagen's online services. Contact AETools for current certificate pricing.

You will also need flatrates (subscriptions). A VW flatrate covers Volkswagen vehicles and an Audi flatrate covers Audi vehicles. You need both if you want to work on both brands, or just one if you only work on one brand.

How long does it take to get approved for ODIS

Approval takes 10-14 business days for most applications. The security certificate cannot be generated until the user has been approved. Certificate generation usually takes an additional 1-2 days after approval.

ODIS key terms explained

GRP is the login used with ODIS that binds the user information with the Organizational ID (ORG ID). GRP can only be issued after an approved application.

Organizational ID (ORG ID) is the ID that identifies the user or company that is registered to the ODIS security certificate.

A flat rate is the license or subscription to a particular manufacturer (VW or Audi). The security certificate allows the ODIS application to be installed and running on the user's laptop.

Does ODIS require NASTF or an LSID

No. The ODIS security certificate and approval process give the user access to all immobilizer and security functions within the software. NASTF and LSID are not required for ODIS.

Can I run ODIS on multiple computers

Yes. ODIS subscriptions are organization-based, not limited to a single device. You can authorize multiple laptops under the same company account as long as each computer has its own certificate. You can either share a single set of credentials across your team or create individual user accounts for each technician or device.
