Nissan VI3 Not Detected in Consult 3 or Consult 4: VCI Manager Update and Recovery Mode

What to check when Consult 3 or Consult 4 cannot see your Nissan VI3, including how to put the VI3 into recovery mode.

Nissan VI3 Not Showing in the VCI Manager

If Consult 3 or Consult 4 cannot find your Nissan VI3, the VI3 may be missing from the VCI Manager even though the software shows its serial number, or it may disconnect right after working. This commonly follows a software update or a reinstall. Work through the steps below in order.

Step 1 - Check the Connection
Plug the VI3 directly into the computer (no USB hub), confirm its lights come on, and make sure the cable is seated at both ends. If the VCI Manager says "component already registered," the VI3 is already registered, so skip re-registering and go to the next steps.

Step 2 - Update the VCI Manager and Consult
An outdated VCI Manager is a common reason a VI3 is not recognized, especially on a tablet whose VCI Manager is several years behind the laptop version. Update Consult 3 and the VCI Manager from the Nissan TechInfo site, then reconnect the VI3.

Step 3 - Put the VI3 Into Recovery Mode

  1. Unplug the VI3 from the vehicle and from the computer.
  2. Remove the black rubber boot on the USB end, next to the void sticker.
  3. Press and hold the gray recovery tab (reset lever).
  4. While still holding it, plug the VI3 into the computer and keep holding for about five seconds.
  5. Open the VCI Manager and confirm the VI3 appears in recovery mode.
  6. Select the Nissan brand, complete the update, and reconnect.
  7. Confirm the serial number in the VCI Manager matches the VI3.

Do not repeat recovery over and over if it does not help; stop after a clean attempt and move to the next step.

Step 4 - Check the Brand Profile
The VI3 holds one brand profile at a time. Recovering it for one brand (for example Mitsubishi) can leave it unusable for another (for example Nissan). Recover it for the brand you need first. If the problem began after programming an Infiniti, see our article on fixing a Nissan Consult 3 VCI that will not connect after programming an Infiniti vehicle.

Step 5 - Reinstall as a Last Step
If the VI3 still is not detected, a corrupted install may be the cause. Remove Consult 3 and the VCI Manager completely with Revo Uninstaller (Advanced scan), restart the computer, and reinstall the current version.
