Nissan Transmission or TCM Replacement: Do You Need to Program It, and What to Do When No File Is Available

How to tell whether a replacement Nissan transmission or TCM needs programming, which relearns to run, and what to check when Nissan shows no data file.

Does a Replacement Nissan Transmission Need Programming?

Not always. Many replacement Nissan transmissions and TCMs arrive already programmed and are plug and play, whether the TCM is inside the transmission or external to it. Before buying anything, check whether a programming file actually exists for your part number.

When Nissan Shows No Data File

If you enter the TCM part number on the Nissan TechInfo site and no purchase option appears, or the lookup shows the file as unavailable, there is usually no file to buy. If the vehicle shifts normally, sets no codes, and the part is already at the latest calibration, no update is needed. If you are unsure, read the TCM part number with Consult 3 or Consult 4 and compare it against the part you installed.

Run the Consult Work Support Functions

After the transmission or valve body is installed, run the applicable Consult work support functions, such as the forward clutch point learn and the G-sensor calibration. A vehicle that will not exceed a low speed or will not move after a transmission swap should be checked for skipped relearns before assuming a programming fault. Keep a battery charger connected during any relearn procedure.

Confirm the Replacement Module Matches the Vehicle

Make sure the TCM or transmission is the correct part for the vehicle's model and year. A module for a different model or year will fail to update, and the fix is to obtain the correct part.

If the Nissan Site Asks for a TCM Serial Number

If the newer Nissan TechInfo site requires a TCM serial number to look up the calibration, selecting Global and then Nissan opens the older site, where you can look up the correct TCM calibration by VIN.

Using the CD or QR Code That Came With the Transmission

If your transmission came with a CD, or a QR code on the unit (for example, on the neutral switch) is needed to configure the TCM, see our article on using the CD that came with your Nissan CVT transmission with Consult III. Copy the file to the computer rather than running it directly from a USB drive, because the software can remove the file after use and you may need it again.
