Installing GM Techline Connect on a New Laptop - Complete Setup Guide

Step-by-step Techline Connect installation on a fresh Windows 11 Pro laptop. Covers ACDelco TDS account setup, Techline Connect download and install, J2534 driver setup (GM MDI 2, AEZ Flasher 3, MaxiFlash Elite), VIN slot configuration, and optional Tech2Win for legacy GM vehicles.

How to install GM Techline Connect on a new laptop

Verify the laptop meets these requirements before beginning the install. Skipping this check is the most common reason GM Techline Connect installs fail or won't launch after install:

- Windows 11 Pro (Windows 10 and Windows 11 Home are no longer supported).
- 8 GB RAM minimum (16 GB recommended).
- 100 GB free disk space minimum.
- Active ACDelco TDS account.
- Active Techline Connect subscription on your ACDelco account.
- A compatible J2534 interface: GM MDI 2, AEZ Flasher 3, MaxiFlash Elite, or compatible.

If you don't have Windows 11 Pro, see the related article - Techline will not install on other Windows versions.

Step 1 - Set up your ACDelco TDS account

If you don't already have an ACDelco TDS account, create one first. The Techline Connect installer and your subscription are both tied to this account:

- Go to acdelcotds.com.
- Click New User Registration.
- Complete the registration with your shop information.
- Verify your email when the confirmation arrives.
- Sign in and verify your subscription appears under My Subscriptions.

If the subscription doesn't appear, contact AETools - they may need to link your subscription to your TDS account.

Step 2 - Download the Techline Connect installer

With the ACDelco TDS account active and subscription confirmed, download the installer:

- Sign into acdelcotds.com.
- Go to Software → Techline Connect.
- Download the latest installer (full installer, not just the updater).
- The download is several GB use a stable connection.

Step 3 - Install Techline Connect

Install the downloaded software:

- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator. This is required for the install to complete correctly.
- Accept the GM license terms.
- Use the default install path.
- Let the installer run. It typically takes 30–60 minutes on a clean Windows 11 Pro install.
- Restart Windows when prompted.

Step 4 - Sign into Techline Connect

After the reboot, complete the first-time sign-in:

- Launch Techline Connect from the Start Menu.
- Sign in with your ACDelco TDS credentials.
- Techline will verify the subscription and download any pending updates.
- Wait for "Ready" status (can take another 15–30 minutes the first time).

Step 5 - Install J2534 interface drivers

You need drivers for whichever J2534 device you'll use with Techline.

For GM MDI 2:

- Install GM MDI Manager (download from ACDelco TDS).
- Run as administrator.
- Connect MDI 2 when prompted.
- Confirm drivers install with no warnings in Device Manager.
- Update MDI 2 firmware from within MDI Manager.

For AEZ Flasher 3 / EZ Flasher / MaxiFlash Elite:

- Install the AEZ Flasher 3 Toolbox (request from AETools support if you don't have the installer).
- Install Drew Technologies CarDAQ drivers if working on older GM vehicles. See the related article.
- Connect the device and verify Device Manager.
- Update firmware through the toolbox.

Step 6 - Configure VIN slots

Techline Connect uses a "VIN slot" model each programming session consumes a slot tied to your subscription. Configure your slot count:

- In Techline Connect, go to Account → VIN Slots (exact path varies by version).
- Verify the VIN slot count matches what you purchased.
- If slots are missing, contact AETools - they may need to push the slot allocation to your account.

Note: Confirm the exact menu path for VIN slot management and typical slot bundles with the AETools team paths can change between Techline Connect versions.

Step 7 - Test on a vehicle

Before relying on the setup for a real job, run a known-good test:

- Plug the J2534 interface into a known-good GM vehicle's OBD-II port.
- Open Techline Connect.
- Click Start Vehicle Session.
- The vehicle should be auto-identified.
- Run a quick diagnostic (read DTCs) to confirm communication.
- If diagnostic works, programming should work though older Global B vehicles may need the CarDAQ drivers (see related article).

Step 8 - Common first-install issues

"PC software installation error / missing server DLL API" - The laptop isn't on Windows 11 Pro. See the related article.

"Techline installs but won't see my MDI / MaxiFlash" - J2534 drivers aren't installed or aren't current. Reinstall the interface software as admin (Step 5).

"Subscription not detected" - Confirm you're signed in with the right ACDelco TDS account. Verify the subscription is active in your TDS account portal. Contact AETools to confirm subscription linkage.

"Older GM vehicle won't program" - Older Global B vehicles need CarDAQ drivers installed separately. See the related article.

Optional - Add Tech2Win for legacy support

If you work on pre-2010 GM vehicles, you may also want GM Tech2Win alongside Techline:

- Tech2Win is purchased separately as a 30-day subscription through ACDelco TDS.
- Install Tech2Win after Techline is fully set up.
- See the related article on Tech2Win activation.

Quick reference - what you should have when done

When the install is complete, you should have all of the following confirmed:

- Windows 11 Pro confirmed.
- Techline Connect installed and signed in.
- J2534 interface drivers installed.
- Interface firmware current.
- VIN slots showing correct count.
- First vehicle session completed successfully.
