How to Program a Key on Jaguar / Land Rover Vehicles
A walkthrough of the JLR key programming procedure using Topix or SDD, from entering the vehicle's Nav ID through testing the new key.
Jaguar / Land Rover Key Programming Overview
Programming a key on a Jaguar or Land Rover vehicle is done through JLR's own diagnostic software - Topix Cloud or SDD, depending on the vehicle's model year - using a compatible VCI or J2534 device. This guide covers the actual key programming steps. For choosing between Topix and SDD by model year, or picking the right hardware for Jaguar / Land Rover work, see the related JLR articles linked below.
Before You Start Jaguar / Land Rover Key Programming
-Confirm the following before beginning a Jaguar or Land Rover key programming job:
-The correct JLR software is installed for the vehicle's model year (Topix Cloud or SDD).
An active JLR subscription covers key programming - JLR offers short-term options including one-hour access, which is often cheaper than a longer subscription for a single key job.
-The JLR software is running on a dedicated computer or partition, separate from Ford, Mazda, or Honda software, since these conflict with JLR installs.
Jaguar / Land Rover Key Programming Procedure
Once the vehicle is connected and the JLR software session is active:
-
Enter the vehicle's Nav ID or serial number into the JLR software when prompted.
-
Follow the on-screen prompts to trigger the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module.
-
Place the key (or keys) on the console as instructed by the software.
-
Follow the remaining on-screen prompts to complete key registration.
-
Test the new key's functions - locking, unlocking, and starting the vehicle - before finishing the job.
Programming a new key does not affect existing keys already registered to the vehicle.
If Jaguar / Land Rover Key Programming Fails
If key programming fails with a communication or network integrity error rather than completing the steps above, this may point to a faulty RFA module or antenna rather than a software or tool problem. See the JLR Topix/Pathfinder troubleshooting article linked below for that scenario.
