How to Fix Cummins Insite "Programming Not Allowed" - License Renewal Guide

Resolve Cummins Insite programming errors caused by an expired subscription. Learn how to check your Basic Key and Functional Key license status, find your Insite Tool Instance ID, and renew through AE Solutions.

The Cummins Insite "Programming Not Allowed" error is almost always caused by an expired Cummins Insite subscription rather than a software bug. Cummins Insite requires two separate license keys to perform programming on a vehicle, and if either one is missing or expired, the software will block programming functionality even though basic diagnostics may still appear to work. This guide walks through how to confirm the cause using the License Configuration Tool and how to renew your subscription through AE Solutions.

This procedure applies to all Cummins Insite installations used for diagnostics and programming on Cummins-powered equipment. Before calling support, complete Step 1 and Step 2 below so you can confirm whether the issue is a license problem and have your Insite Tool Instance ID ready for the renewal process.

Cummins Insite license check and renewal procedure

Follow the three steps below in order. The License Configuration Tool check in Step 1 is essential - without your Insite Tool Instance ID, AE Solutions cannot process a renewal.

Step 1 - Open the License Configuration Tool

The License Configuration Tool is built into every Cummins Insite installation and shows the current license status for your software. To open it:

- Go to the search bar on the Windows taskbar.
- Type "License Configuration Tool" and open it.
- The tool will display the Insite Tool Instance ID for your installation. This ID is required for any license renewal - write it down or take a screenshot before continuing.

Step 2 - Check your license status

Cummins Insite requires both of the following keys to be active for full functionality:

- Basic Key - the base license that allows Cummins Insite to launch and perform basic diagnostics.
- Functional Key - enables full programming functionality (ECM calibration, parameter changes, etc.).

If the License Configuration Tool shows only the Basic License on screen and no Functional Key, your subscription has expired. Both keys are required for Cummins Insite to open and function correctly for programming. This is the cause of the "Programming Not Allowed" error.

If both keys are listed as active and you are still seeing the error, contact AE Solutions support with your Insite Tool Instance ID - there may be an account-side issue that needs to be re-verified.

Step 3 - Renew an expired subscription

If your subscription has expired, follow these steps to renew through AE Solutions:

- Call 913-856-6678 and ask for the Sales department.
- A sales representative will collect payment and provide you with a Sales Order Number.
- Visit https://aesolutions.us and submit a support ticket.
- In the support ticket, include your Sales Order Number (provided by the sales rep) and your Insite Tool Instance ID (from the License Configuration Tool in Step 1).

Important: Have your Insite Tool Instance ID ready before calling or submitting a ticket. This ID is displayed in the License Configuration Tool and is required to process your renewal. Without it, AE Solutions cannot reactivate the Functional Key on your installation.

Once the renewal is processed, both the Basic Key and Functional Key will reactivate in the License Configuration Tool, and the "Programming Not Allowed" error will clear. You may need to close and reopen Cummins Insite for the new license status to take effect.
