GM SPS2 Install Errors (E7979, Missing DLL, API Errors): Resolution Guide

GM SPS2 install failures are almost always Windows-environment problems an unsupported OS, missing .NET / Visual C++ runtimes, or too little RAM - not a fault in SPS2 itself. Here's how to fix them.

A GM SPS2 install that fails with error E7979, a "missing DLL," or an "API not found" message is almost always a Windows-environment problem an unsupported operating system, missing runtime components, or insufficient RAM - rather than a fault in SPS2 itself. SPS2 is part of the GM Techline Connect programming environment, so this is an Installation & Setup issue, and retrying the installer without fixing the underlying environment will fail the same way. Work through the checks below in order.

Step 1 - Confirm Windows 11 Pro and enough RAM

- Windows 11 Pro - Windows 10 and Windows 11 Home are no longer supported and are the most common cause of SPS2 install failures.

- 16 GB RAM (GM's DISG specification; 8 GB is below GM spec and is not recommended for SPS2 programming).

- Confirm both under Settings → System → About. If either falls short, the install won't succeed reliably no matter how many times you retry. If the laptop is on Windows 10, upgrade to Windows 11 Pro if eligible or replace it - call AE Tools with the laptop serial to check upgrade eligibility, or see the preloaded-laptop options article.

Step 2 - Install the Windows runtime prerequisites

SPS2 depends on Windows runtime components, and most "missing DLL" or "API not found" errors clear once these are current:

1. Install the latest .NET runtime (LTS version) from Microsoft.

2. Install the Visual C++ Redistributable packages - both the x86 and x64 versions.

3. Restart the laptop after installing the prerequisites.

Step 3 - Run the installer correctly

1. Download the SPS2 / Techline Connect installer from acdelcotds.com using your ACDelco TDS credentials.

2. Right-click the installer and Run as administrator.

3. Temporarily disable third-party antivirus during the install (re-enable it afterward).

4. If Windows Defender real-time protection blocks the installer, disable it for the install and turn it back on after.

5. Let the install complete without interruption, and restart the laptop when prompted.

Step 4 - Resolve error E7979 specifically

E7979 is a generic GM install error that nearly always traces back to the environment:

1. Confirm Windows 11 Pro (Step 1).

2. Confirm the .NET and Visual C++ prerequisites are installed (Step 2).

3. Run the installer as administrator (Step 3).

4. If E7979 persists, the install media may be corrupted — re-download the installer from acdelcotds.com with your ACDelco TDS credentials.

5. If E7979 still appears with a fresh download, call AE Tools — there may be a known issue with the current build.

Step 5 - RAM-related programming failures

On a laptop with only 8 GB of RAM, SPS2 may install but then fail during programming — the install completes, programming starts, then fails mid-flash, which can brick the module. Do not run customer programming on an 8 GB laptop; the risk of a bricked module outweighs the cost of fixing the hardware. The options are to upgrade the laptop to 16 GB of RAM where the hardware supports it, or to move to a properly specified Windows 11 Pro / 16 GB machine (see the preloaded diagnostic-laptop options article for current models and pricing).

Troubleshooting: SPS2 installs but won't run, or antivirus blocks it

"The install completes but SPS2 won't launch." This is usually missing or corrupted .NET / Visual C++ runtimes — reinstall them (Step 2), restart, and retry.

"Antivirus keeps blocking the install." Add the SPS2 installer and the Techline Connect install path as exceptions in your antivirus. Avast is a known conflict; if it can't be cleanly excluded, temporarily uninstall it for the install and reinstall it afterward.
