Ford IDS, FDRS, and FJDS Licensing Through Your Motorcraft Account: Sponsor Setup, Email Matching, and Fixing a License That Stopped Working
Ford IDS, FDRS, and FJDS licenses purchased from AE Tools attach to your Motorcraft Service account email instead of arriving as an activation code, and AE Tools has to be listed as your sponsor. This guide covers sponsor setup, the email-matching rule, and how to restore a Ford license that suddenly stopped being recognized.
Ford diagnostic subscriptions sold by AE Tools are not delivered as an emailed activation code. The Ford license is applied directly to the email address on your Motorcraft Service account at motorcraftservice.com, and Ford only recognizes that license when AE Tools is listed as the sponsor on the same Motorcraft account. This licensing model is the single most common reason a Ford IDS, FDRS, or FJDS subscription appears to stop working even though it was paid for and previously ran fine. This Updates & Licensing guide covers how the Ford sponsor relationship works, how to set it up, why an email mismatch breaks it, and how to restore a Ford license that is no longer being recognized.
How Ford IDS, FDRS, and FJDS licensing works
Ford diagnostic licensing changed in three ways that shops working on Ford and Lincoln vehicles need to understand:
-One Ford subscription now covers all three applications. Ford IDS, FDRS, and FJDS were previously separate purchases. They are now a single Ford diagnostic subscription that unlocks all three pieces of software.
-The Ford subscription attaches to an email address, not to an activation code. When AE Tools applies your Ford license, it is applied to the exact email you use to sign into Motorcraft Service and into the Ford software. Nothing is emailed to you to enter.
-Your Motorcraft account must sit on the AE Tools sponsor list. Ford uses a sponsor relationship to link an independent repair shop to the reseller supplying the Ford license. If your Motorcraft account is not on the AE Tools sponsor list, the Ford subscription cannot be applied to it at all.
-Ford hardware does not include Ford software. A VCM2 or VCM3 purchase covers the vehicle communication interface only. The Ford diagnostic subscription is a separate line item on the order.
If you are holding an old Ford activation code
Before Ford moved to subscriptions, Ford licenses were supplied as an activation code entered inside IDS or FJDS through License Management. Ford retired that method between September and December 2025, and codes issued under it no longer activate in the Ford software.
If you purchased a Ford license in that window and never used the code, do not keep retrying it in License Management. The code cannot activate regardless of how it is entered. Submit a support ticket with your original AE Tools order number and the code, and AE Tools will confirm what options are available on that order.
Prerequisites for a Ford license
Have all of the following ready before AE Tools applies a Ford IDS, FDRS, or FJDS subscription:
-A Motorcraft Service account at motorcraftservice.com, created with the email address the technician will actually use to sign into the Ford software.
-AE Tools set as the sponsor on that same Motorcraft Service account.
-The current version of Ford IDS, FDRS, or FJDS installed on the diagnostic laptop. Older Ford software versions do not present the Motorcraft login prompt correctly.
-A supported vehicle communication interface: a Ford VCM2, a Ford VCM3, or an AEZ Flasher 3 for FJDS J2534 work.
Setting up Ford licensing on your Motorcraft account
Step 1 - Create or confirm the Motorcraft Service account
-
Go to motorcraftservice.com and create a professional technician account, or sign into the existing Motorcraft account.
-
Use a single permanent shop email for the Motorcraft account. Personal inboxes and shared addresses that change when staff leave are the most common source of Ford licensing problems months later.
-
Complete the Motorcraft email verification step to confirm the account.
Step 2 - Add AE Tools as your Ford sponsor
-
Sign into motorcraftservice.com and open your Motorcraft account profile settings.
-
Open the sponsor or distributor section of the Motorcraft profile.
-
Enter the AE Tools sponsor address shown on your AE Tools order confirmation, or supplied to you by the AE Tools team.
-
Save the Motorcraft profile and sign out.
-
Send AE Tools the exact Motorcraft email address once the sponsor is saved, so the Ford subscription can be applied to that address.
If you are not sure which AE Tools sponsor address to enter on your Motorcraft account, submit a support ticket. AE Tools will confirm the correct sponsor address and add your Motorcraft account to the sponsor list.
Step 3 - Confirm the Ford subscription is active
-
Sign into motorcraftservice.com and open the subscriptions section. An applied Ford license shows as active with an expiration date.
-
Open Ford IDS, FDRS, or FJDS on the diagnostic laptop. The Ford application prompts for your Motorcraft login and validates the subscription against that Motorcraft account.
-
If the Ford software validates and opens, no further activation step is required.
Restoring a Ford license that stopped working
Motorcraft accounts occasionally drop off the AE Tools sponsor list. When that happens, the Ford subscription is still paid for and still sitting on the Motorcraft account, but Ford no longer associates that account with a sponsor, and Ford IDS or FDRS behaves as though the license is gone entirely.
Typical symptoms of a Motorcraft account that has dropped off the Ford sponsor list:
-
Login failure in Ford IDS or FDRS even though the Motorcraft password is correct.
-
A Ford XML authentication error when launching the software.
-
A Ford session error on startup.
-
Ford software opening but reporting no active subscription.
-
A Ford subscription visible on motorcraftservice.com that the Ford application does not recognize.
To restore a Ford license that has dropped off the sponsor list:
-
Sign into motorcraftservice.com and confirm the Ford subscription is still listed against your Motorcraft account.
-
Re-add the AE Tools sponsor in your Motorcraft profile settings.
-
Sign out of Ford IDS, FDRS, or FJDS completely, then sign back in with your Motorcraft credentials.
-
If the Ford subscription still is not recognized, submit a support ticket with your Motorcraft email, the Ford software you are running, and the exact error text. AE Tools can confirm which email address the Ford subscription was applied to.
Ford email mismatch — the most common root cause
A Ford email mismatch is the most common root cause of Ford IDS and FDRS login failures in shops with more than one technician. If two technicians in the same shop each hold a Motorcraft login, the Ford subscription is only valid on the Motorcraft account it was applied to. Signing into the Ford software with the other technician's email produces exactly the same errors as an expired Ford subscription.
Before troubleshooting the Ford software, the diagnostic laptop, or the VCM2 or VCM3 interface, confirm all three of the following:
- The email used to sign into Ford IDS, FDRS, or FJDS matches the email on the AE Tools order.
- That same email is the Motorcraft account carrying the AE Tools sponsor relationship.
- The Motorcraft account has not been recreated under a new address after a staff change.
If a Ford subscription needs to move to a different technician's Motorcraft email, submit a support ticket with both the old and new email addresses and AE Tools can reassign the Ford license.
Ford subscription lengths
Ford diagnostic subscriptions are available in short-term, monthly, and annual terms, and every term covers Ford IDS, FDRS, and FJDS together. A short-term Ford subscription suits a shop taking on a single Ford or Lincoln job. An annual Ford subscription suits shops doing regular Ford work, and removes the setup delay from the job because the license is already attached to the Motorcraft account. Contact AE Tools sales to confirm current Ford subscription pricing and which term fits the Ford work you have coming up.
