Durabook Multi-Partition Software Issues - Boot Loops, Wi-Fi Hotspot Conflicts, and Cross-Partition Setup
Diagnose operational issues across a multi-partition Durabook laptop - boot loops in automatic repair, per-partition Wi-Fi and hotspot setup, transferring files between partitions, Windows 11 compatibility on older hardware, and repurposing a partition for a different OEM.
Common multi-partition issues
This article covers operational issues across a multi-partition Durabook setup. It's distinct from single-partition crashes for a partition that won't boot at all, see the related "black screen" / BootIT recovery articles.
Symptoms covered here:
- Booting into automatic repair loop, then back to BootIT menu.
- One partition has Wi-Fi or hotspot working, others don't.
- Transferring files between partitions.
- Old Durabook that can't run Windows 11 (required for GM and other modern OEM software).
- Repurposing a partition for a different OEM.
- A partition missing from the BootIT menu.
Issue 1 - Partition boots to automatic repair, then loops
When a partition enters Windows automatic repair:
- Let it complete the first time - sometimes it finds and fixes the issue.
- If it loops repeatedly back to the BootIT menu after attempted repair, something prevents Windows from completing repair.
Quick diagnosis from another partition:
- Boot into a working partition.
- Open File Explorer.
- Check Disk Management (right-click Start → Disk Management).
- Look at the failing partition's status:
- Healthy → Windows install is intact but won't boot. May need Windows recovery from inside the partition.
- RAW or unallocated → Partition table is damaged. Don't touch it - open an AETools ticket immediately.
If the partition has to be wiped and restored, everything saved inside it is lost — including saved passwords and signed-in sessions for the OEM portals on that partition. A shop can lose access to several OEM accounts at once and only discover it with a vehicle on the lift. Have the credentials for each partition recorded somewhere outside the laptop before you need them, as covered at the end of this article. Where OKTA or TOTP is involved, configure the authenticator on a phone rather than on the laptop — a phone authenticator survives a wipe.
Issue 2 - Wi-Fi works on one partition, not another
Each partition has its own Windows install with its own Wi-Fi profiles. Connecting to your shop Wi-Fi on Partition 1 does not automatically connect Partition 2:
- Boot into the partition that has no Wi-Fi.
- Set up Wi-Fi like a fresh Windows install - click the Wi-Fi icon in the system tray, select your network, enter the password.
- Each partition needs to be configured separately.
Hotspot specifically (for WSP / Wireless Smart Pod): Hotspot is enabled per-partition. Switching partitions disables the previous partition's hotspot. Configure the hotspot fresh on each partition where you need it.
Issue 3 - Transferring files between partitions
Each partition is a separate Windows install, so files saved on one don't appear on another. You have three options:
Option A - USB drive (simplest):
- Save files to USB on the source partition.
- Reboot to the destination partition.
- Copy files from USB.
Option B - Shared partition (if configured):
Some Durabook builds include a shared data partition accessible from all OEM partitions. Check with AETools whether your laptop has this.
Option C - Cloud (Wi-Fi required):
Save to OneDrive, Google Drive, or similar from one partition; sync down on another.
Note: Confirm with the AETools team do AETools Durabooks ship with a shared data partition by default? This may vary by order.
Issue 4 - Old Durabook can't run Windows 11
Many older Durabooks (pre-2022) and similar diagnostic laptops can't upgrade to Windows 11 due to TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, or CPU compatibility issues. This is a growing problem because:
- GM Techline Connect requires Windows 11 Pro (no longer supports Windows 10).
- Several other OEMs are following GM's lead in 2026.
Check eligibility first:
Run Microsoft's PC Health Check (download from aka.ms/GetPCHealthCheckApp). It will explicitly tell you whether your laptop can upgrade.
If eligible - back up first, then upgrade:
A Windows 11 in-place upgrade should preserve installed software, but license activations on diagnostic software may need to be re-applied. Get all credentials documented before upgrading.
If not eligible - your options:
- Send the laptop to AETools for an in-house upgrade. They maintain a waitlist for hardware refreshes that allow Windows 11. Contact AETools to be added.
- Buy a new Durabook. Approximately $3,300 for a current Durabook S14 - confirm current pricing with sales.
- Continue using the old laptop for non-GM work only. Ford, Chrysler, and many foreign OEMs still allow Windows 10 in some configurations. GM is the most restrictive.
Issue 5 - Partition needs a different OEM than what shipped
You ordered the laptop with Partitions 1–5 allocated to specific OEMs, and now you want to repurpose a partition for a different OEM.
Don't try to do this yourself. Repurposing a partition involves wiping the existing OEM install, installing a fresh Windows + OEM stack, activating new licenses, and configuring per-partition Wi-Fi and accounts.
Open a support ticket and request the change. AETools can do it remotely typically a 1–3 hour session per partition being changed.
Issue 6 - Boot menu doesn't show a partition
A partition can disappear from the BootIT menu if the menu entry is corrupted (the partition data is still intact). Symptom: 4 partitions show in the menu but you ordered 5.
This is recoverable but requires running BootIT recovery open a support ticket. See the related article on BootIT recovery.
Working efficiently with multi-partition laptops:
A few habits that keep multi-partition Durabooks running well:
- Shut down cleanly before rebooting to another partition. Don't power off mid-Windows-session.
- Document which partition is for what with a sticker on the laptop or a saved note. The BootIT labels can be cryptic.
- Keep credentials per partition in a password manager, not just saved in the browser. Browser-saved passwords live inside the partition and are lost if it has to be restored.
- Update Windows on each partition individually during planned downtime, not while a customer's job is in progress.
