Choosing and Placing a Mobile Hotspot for Diagnostic Programming: Band Settings, Signal at the Vehicle, and Backup Connections
Module programming pulls calibrations from the manufacturer while the flash is running, so the connection has to hold at the vehicle rather than at the front counter. This guide covers picking a hotspot, setting it to the right band for wireless pods, keeping a fallback carrier, and what to check when a connection drops mid-job.
Module programming is an online process. The software pulls the calibration from the manufacturer while the flash is running, so the diagnostic laptop and, for wireless interfaces, the pod itself both need a connection that holds for the duration of the event at the vehicle. A connection that drops midway through a flash can leave a module in a partially programmed state, which is a far longer job than the one you started. Connection problems fall into three areas, and the fix is different for each:

Set the hotspot to 2.4 GHz before pairing a wireless pod
This is the most common reason a pod that works on shop Wi-Fi will not join a phone hotspot. The MicroPod 2 and Wireless Smart Pod do not support all 5 GHz networks, and most current phones default their hotspot to 5 GHz.
Before attempting to pair the pod:

Open the hotspot settings on the phone or hotspot device.

Find the band setting. It may be labelled band, frequency, or compatibility mode.

Select 2.4 GHz, or enable the maximum compatibility option, which forces 2.4 GHz.

Restart the hotspot so the new band is broadcasting before the pod scans for networks.

Confirm signal where the work happens
Signal at the front counter tells you nothing about signal at the vehicle. Bays with metal roofing, vehicles on a lift, and below-grade or interior garages all attenuate heavily.
Before starting a programming event:

Take the laptop to the vehicle and confirm it loads a web page from that position.

Check the signal indicator on the hotspot itself where it will sit, not where you set it up.

Confirm the hotspot has carrier service rather than just power. A hotspot can show connected clients while having no upstream signal at all.

Connect a battery maintainer, so a voltage drop is not competing with a connection drop as the cause if the flash fails.
Placing the hotspot
Position the hotspot for the carrier signal, not for convenience:

Put it near a window, a bay door, or outside the building rather than beside the vehicle. A few feet often decides it under a metal roof.

Keep it off the floor and away from the vehicle body, lifts, and racking.

Leave it in one position once the flash starts. Moving it mid-event is a common cause of a drop.
Keep a second carrier available
The single most effective fix for mobile work is having two connections on different carriers. Coverage varies enough between carriers that a location where one is unusable is often fine on another.

Configure both a dedicated hotspot device and a phone hotspot, and set both to 2.4 GHz.

Add both networks to the pod in advance, so it can join either without reconfiguration on site. The pod will reconnect to known networks automatically.

If a site is consistently poor on one carrier, note it and default to the other for that customer.
Windows connection preference
If the diagnostic laptop is connected to both Ethernet and a hotspot, Windows may route through whichever it saw first rather than the one you intend. On a machine that needs to use a specific connection, disable the other for the duration of the session.
Built-in mobile broadband
Some diagnostic laptops ship with a built-in LTE or 5G card. If that connection drops repeatedly at multiple locations, the carrier profile on the machine may need correcting. Submit a support ticket with the laptop serial number and the carrier, and work from a phone hotspot in the meantime.
Large installs and data updates
Initial software installs and full data updates run to several gigabytes and can take hours over a weak hotspot, or stall partway and leave a broken installation. Where possible, run first installs and major updates on a wired connection or shop Wi-Fi, and keep the hotspot for programming events. If an install stalls on a poor connection, resume it later on a better one rather than forcing it through.
