Can I Program a Mercedes Key with the OEM Tool?

When it comes to Mercedes-Benz vehicles, key programming is not handled the way it is with many other manufacturers. While Mercedes does offer an OEM diagnostic tool, known as XENTRY, its role in key programming is limited—and very different from what locksmiths may be used to.

What Is the XENTRY Tool?

XENTRY is Mercedes-Benz’s official diagnostic and programming platform. The OEM version comes as a proprietary tablet, bundled with multiple years of licensing and access. It is extremely expensive, with the current cost estimated at around $54,000 USD.

This price includes:

  • The XENTRY tablet device

  • Multi-year software and subscription support

  • Access to Mercedes-Benz’s secure backend systems

Due to its high cost, XENTRY is typically only used by authorized dealers and high-volume specialists.

Can XENTRY Program Mercedes Keys?

No, not directly. Despite being the official tool, XENTRY does not allow you to program keys manually in the traditional sense.

Instead, it acts as a secure key ordering interface. Here’s how it works:

  1. You use XENTRY to submit a key request tied to a specific VIN.

  2. Mercedes processes the request and sends a pre-programmed key.

  3. Once the key arrives, it is ready to use—no additional programming is required.

What This Means for Locksmiths

If you're primarily performing locksmith-related tasks, be aware:

  • XENTRY is not a key programming tool in the traditional sense.

  • You cannot program used keys or keys you’ve sourced elsewhere.

  • You are limited to ordering new keys directly from Mercedes.
