Autel IM608 Key Programming - AutoAuth Registration, Activation Codes, and Brand Coverage

Complete setup guide for Autel IM608 key programming on Chrysler, Nissan, Mercedes, Audi/VW, and other gateway-protected vehicles. Covers AutoAuth registration, OEM-specific subscriptions like Ottawa gateway, and how to apply activation codes correctly.

What this article covers

The Autel IM608 (and IM608 Pro) is a key programming and immobilizer tool. It works on most vehicles out of the box for diagnostics, but key programming on Chrysler, Nissan, and Mercedes requires additional setup:

- An AutoAuth account to access secure gateways.
- Active OEM-side subscriptions (separate from your Autel subscription).
- Correct entry of activation codes when you install Autel software cards.

The six-step procedure below covers the full setup. Steps 1–4 are the setup itself. Steps 5–6 are how to verify the setup works and what to do when the IM608 doesn't have what you need for a specific job.

Step 1 - Confirm the IM608 is up to date

Before key programming, update the tablet:

- On the tablet, go to Profile → Updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the tablet after major updates.

If updates don't install, see the related article on Autel update issues.

Step 2 - Register with AutoAuth for gateway-protected brands

AutoAuth is a separate service that handles secure gateway authentication. It is required for:

- Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep / Ram / Stellantis - security gateway access.
- Nissan / Infiniti - newer models with secure gateway.
- Mercedes-Benz - secure gateway authentication.

AETools does not manage AutoAuth on your behalf. You register and pay AutoAuth directly:

- Go to autoauthservice.com (or current AutoAuth registration URL).
- Create an account using your shop information.
- Pay AutoAuth's subscription fee (separate from your Autel and OEM subscriptions).
- Register the IM608 device with your AutoAuth account.
- AutoAuth issues credentials that the IM608 uses for gateway authentication.

Note: Verify the current AutoAuth registration URL and fee with the AETools sales team these may change over time.

Step 3 - Add OEM-specific subscriptions

In addition to AutoAuth, some brands require their own subscription for the IM608 itself (not the vehicle).

Chrysler - Ottawa gateway subscription. For Chrysler key programming and diagnostics through the IM608:

- Purchase the Ottawa gateway subscription through your Autel reseller.
- Register it on a computer (Autel's Maxisys PC tool).
- Enable it on the IM608 from the device settings.

Note: Confirm the "Ottawa gateway" naming with the AETools team - the term may be specific to one customer's setup and could be referred to differently in other contexts.

Audi / Volkswagen. IM608 supports Audi/VW key programming with its own subscription (separate from the gateway).

Step 4 - Apply activation codes correctly

When you receive an Autel software card or activation code (for ADAS, EV, gateway, etc.), watch for 17 vs 22 character mismatches this is a common cause of activation failure. Activation codes are formatted differently for different Autel products:

- Some codes are 17 characters.
- Some are 22 characters.
- Some include dashes; some don't.

Enter the code exactly as provided, including dashes and case. If activation fails:

- Re-check the code character-by-character.
- Confirm you're entering it on the correct product menu (ADAS code on ADAS menu, etc.).
- Contact Autel support or AETools if the code is correct but rejected.

Step 5 - Test key programming on a real vehicle

Pick a vehicle you've successfully programmed before, or a low-stakes practice vehicle:

- Connect IM608 to the OBD port.
- Open the Immobilizer function (IMMO).
- Select the vehicle's make and model.
- The tool authenticates with the gateway (if required) using your AutoAuth credentials.
- Follow the key programming routine.

Common gateway authentication failures:

- AutoAuth subscription expired.
- AutoAuth registration didn't propagate yet (wait 24 hours after first registration).
- Wrong AutoAuth credentials on the device.

Step 6 - Backup tools when IM608 doesn't have what you need

The IM608 doesn't replace OEM software for every job. Situations where you'll still need an OEM tool:

- Nissan keys on newer Infiniti / Nissan models - Console 4 with Bosch BCI is often more reliable. See related article.
- Mercedes more complex keys - XENTRY-based tools may still be needed.
- Chrysler 2024+ vehicles with RFH module issues - see the article on Stellantis 0x33 error.

Common follow-up issues

"IM608 says my AutoAuth is invalid" - Confirm AutoAuth subscription is paid. Re-enter credentials on the IM608. AETools cannot reset AutoAuth - contact AutoAuth support.

"Subscription on the IM608 expired" - Contact AETools sales for renewal. Provide the IM608 serial number.

"Can I use my IM608 subscription on another Autel tablet?" - No. Subscriptions are tied to the specific tablet serial.

"AutoAuth says my tool isn't authorized" - The tool serial must be registered to your AutoAuth account. Log into AutoAuth and confirm the IM608 serial is listed. If it isn't, add it.
