AEZ Flasher 3: Key and Immobilizer Programming - What It Can and Can't Do by Make
The AEZ Flasher 3 is a J2534 pass-thru that works on all makes, but what it can do for keys and immobilizers depends on the manufacturer. Chrysler has full capability through WiTECH J2534; Nissan keys need a VI3; and some Jeep models require an MDP MicroPod.
The most common question about the AEZ Flasher 3 and keys is simply "can it program keys on this vehicle, or do I need a different tool?" The short answer: the AEZ Flasher 3 is a J2534 pass-thru device that works on all makes, but what it can actually do for key and immobilizer programming depends on the manufacturer — because each OEM exposes different functions through J2534. On some makes it has full key capability; on others it can't do keys at all and you need a different tool. This article explains how that works and covers the specific cases customers ask about most.
The key point: capability depends on the manufacturer
The AEZ Flasher 3 connects on every make as a J2534 device, but each manufacturer's J2534 interface exposes a different set of functions. So "can the Flasher do keys?" isn't a single yes or no — it depends on what that OEM makes available through J2534:
- Chrysler (WiTECH J2534) — full capability. The Flasher 3 running WiTECH 2 J2534 software has the same capabilities as the OEM software, including key and immobilizer programming.
- Nissan (J2534) — limited. Nissan's J2534 only exposes PCM and TCM functions through the Flasher — it does not do Nissan keys (see the Nissan/VI3 note below).
As a rule: if the OEM's J2534 exposes the immobilizer/key functions (as Chrysler's does), the Flasher can do keys; if it doesn't (as with Nissan), you need the OEM or dedicated key tool for that make.
Chrysler / Stellantis keys — AEZ Flasher 3 works (WiTECH J2534)
For Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Fiat, the AEZ Flasher 3 does key and immobilizer programming using WiTECH 2 J2534 software with full capability, the same as the OEM software. (The MDP and WSP MicroPods do the same work using WiTECH 2.0 software instead.) For setup, see the WiTECH / MicroPod / Flasher setup guide.
Nissan keys - require a VI3, not the Flasher
The AEZ Flasher 3's Nissan J2534 only covers PCM and TCM programming — it does not program Nissan keys. Nissan key programming requires a VI3 interface. If you're doing Nissan keys, plan on the VI3 rather than the Flasher. For the Nissan key procedure, see the Nissan key programming article.
GM keys - 2023-and-newer need an MDI, not the Flasher
On 2023-and-newer GM vehicles, immobilizer programming requires a GM MDI — the AEZ Flasher 3 will not program immobilizers on these. On older GM vehicles, the Flasher can be used as a J2534 pass-thru through Techline Connect. (Note that Techline Connect requires Windows 11.) See the GM key programming article for the full procedure.
WSP MicroPod limits - serial number and specific Jeep models
If you're using a WSP MicroPod for Stellantis work, two limits matter:
- Serial number: WSP units with serial WSP-51360 and lower are too old for current work — use an MDP MicroPod or an AEZ Flasher 3 instead.
- Vehicle coverage: the WSP cannot do the Jeep Cherokee L or the Wagoneer. Those vehicles require an MDP MicroPod.
Which tool for keys - quick reference
- Chrysler / Stellantis keys — AEZ Flasher 3 (WiTECH J2534) or an MDP / WSP MicroPod (WiTECH 2.0), subject to the WSP limits above.
- Jeep Cherokee L / Wagoneer — MDP MicroPod (not WSP). - Nissan keys — VI3 (not the Flasher).
- GM keys, 2023 and newer — GM MDI (not the Flasher).
- Other makes — the Flasher works as a J2534 device, but key capability depends on what that OEM exposes through J2534. Contact AE Tools to confirm the right tool for a specific make and year.
