What Serial Data Authentication failure looks like in practice-
When a third-party J2534 tool (such as Pulsar, EZ Flasher, or another generic pass-thru device) can't satisfy Serial Data Authentication on a Global B / VIP vehicle, the symptom techs see is a VIN mismatch error during key or module programming — not a connection failure. The tool appears to communicate with the vehicle but reports the wrong VIN or fails validation mid-programming. The GM MDI 2 does not have this issue because it fully supports Serial Data Authentication.
Workaround if you're stuck with a non-MDI2 tool mid-job-
In some cases, uninstalling and reinstalling the pass-thru tool's driver suite in a specific order has resolved VIN mismatch errors: remove any conflicting third-party driver components first (e.g., D-Link, Bosch), then remove and reinstall the GM software suite last. This is a workaround, not a fix — GM MDI 2 remains the reliable option for Global B / VIP vehicles.
