Do I need to program new modules for a Honda or Acura vehicle?
Overview of when programming, initialization, or security alignment is required after installing a new module on a Honda or Acura. Covers pre-programmed modules from the factory, ABS initialization, and NASTF LSID requirements for security modules.
Replacing or installing a new module in a Honda or Acura and not sure if it needs to be programmed? Generally, no traditional ECU programming is required - but some modules need initialization or security alignment after installation. Here's what to expect.
New Honda modules come pre-programmed
Most replacement modules from Honda come pre-programmed from the factory. You do NOT need to perform any traditional ECU programming after installation.
Module initialization may be required
Some modules, such as the ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) module, require initialization after installation to properly function. This can typically be done using a professional scan tool.
Security module alignment
If you're replacing a security-related module, such as an immobilizer or smart key unit, you'll need to:
- Have an active NASTF account with a valid LSID (Locksmith ID)
- Use the official Honda diagnostic software to perform security alignment
Without LSID credentials, you won't be able to complete security-related procedures.
Important notes about Honda module programming
If you specifically need to program or add a key to a Honda or Acura, see our article on Honda/Acura key programming with a handheld scan tool before proceeding. Some Honda models can have their immobilizer bricked during aftermarket key programming, so the workflow for a key is different from a general module replacement.
